Critique of Secret Origins

The first Spanish film that mixes the thriller with the superhero genre comes to Netflix

On August 28, Secret Origins will be released on Netflix. Adaptation of the homonymous novel by David Galán Galindo. Who has also been in charge of writing the script and directing the film. The film has had a luxury cast formed by Javier Rey, Verónica Echegui, Brays Efe, Antonio Resines, Ernesto Alterio, Carlos Areces, Juanfra Juárez, Alex García and Leonardo Sbaraglia.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the film industry has had to adapt to a new reality with movie theaters closed or at half throttle and premieres moving from dates or directly being released on streaming platforms such as Netflix. This has been the case of Secret Origins, a film that was presented at the Valencia Comic Fair at the end of February and that had planned its premiere in theaters, but that due to the pandemic has had to change its plans.

Secret Origins follows the story of a serial killer who is wreaking havoc in the Spanish capital. Anonymous and offline people are being killed imitating the first appearances of the best-known superheroes. Cosme is the best detective in his station and is about to retire against his will. David is his relief and he is young and impulsive. Both will have the mission to fit the pieces in a game, of which they are completely unaware of the rules.

In their adventure they will have the help of Jorge Elías, son of Cosme, a beloved geek and owner of a comic book store, and Norma, their boss and lover of manga and cosplay. They say that sometimes you have to put on your suit and go out and make this world a better place. This may be one of them.

Who Said You Can't Make A Good Thriller With Superheroes?

With Secret Origins David Galán did not want to make the typical Spanish superhero film as a parody of the genre. The film is a Buddy Movie by the unique couple formed by the characters David (Javier Rey) and Jorge (Brays Efe) wrapped in a thiller with hints of terror.

You could say that Secret Origins is a mix of David Fincher's SEVEN and Kick Ass. In fact, narratively, the film has a lot in common with Fincher's film, since in both there is a detective who is about to retire and has to instruct his relief, as well as the nature of the crimes they are investigating, if in the starring film by Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt investigate murders that recreate the seven deadly sins, here are investigated crimes that allude to the secret origins of comic book characters known to the Marvel and DC fandome. In fact, the movie is a history class for comic book lovers since references are made to the number one characters well known to fans, but these are not the only references, since the most geeks can discover a lot of Easter eggs during the viewing of the film, from movie objects to names of characters with names of well-known publishers in Spain.

The film is very entertaining from start to finish and it is interesting to see how the clues are discovered and the puzzle is formed to solve the case, as well as the evolution of both the characters and the relationship of David and Jorge, whose personalities are completely opposite and they give the plot funny moments that relax the tension that can be experienced in some moments; also highlight the interpretation of Javier Rey and Brays Efe who support the entire weight of the plot.

In short, Secret Origins is a film that thriller lovers and fans of comics and superhero movies will surely like, and we hope we can see more installments that continue with the adventures of David, Jorge and Rule.
