A new study on Marvel movies finds that Hawkeye is UCM's most valuable hero, based on box office and criticism.
Debuting in Thor in 2011, the character is one of the original six Avengers and helped establish the foundation on which the Marvel movies were built. Jeremy Renner has played Hawk Eye in a total of five movies so far, most recently in Avengers: Endgame (2019). And although the Infinity Saga is finished, Marvel still has plans for the archer, as he heads an independent television show that will premiere on the Disney + streaming platform.
While Hawkeye has a fair amount of fans, arguably he is not the most popular hero in Marvel movies, especially compared to Hombre de Hierro, Captain America or Thor. Those three are probably the first superheroes to come to mind when one thinks of the franchise, but according to statistics, they're not as valuable as Hawkeye.
A Film Franchise Showdown studio examined the UCM, analyzing movie reviews, box office totals, and award nominations.
The results showed that Hawkeye is the most valuable hero, with an ROI score of 5.3 per appearance in the film. The goalkeeper has a slight advantage over Thor (5.06). While Captain America gets a 4.9, Iron Man instead only reaches 4.8. Star-Lord and Black Widow are also in the top five.
At first glance, this may be surprising, but it is easy to explain. Many of Hawkeye's roles have come in installments widely considered among the best of all Marvel movies, including The Avengers (2012), Captain America: Civil War (2016), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). In contrast, the Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor movies have come in for much more mixed reactions. Iron Man 2 (2010) and Thor: The Dark World (2013) are two of the weakest entries, particularly from a critical perspective. Even Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) ranks low on the Film Franchise Showdown list, due to low box office numbers.
Of course, the study methods are somewhat biased in favor of Hawkeye. All but one of his appearances have been in major Marvel movies which are some of the most shocking events UCM had to offer. It is no exaggeration to say that something like Endgame or Civil War would rank higher than a "smaller" solo movie. The results do not indicate that an independent Hawkeye movie is a project that Marvel should consider for most viewers. Still, it's amusing to consider that there is a metric where Hawkeye, who has no superpowers, is the most valuable hero.
The ROI Score is a way of calculating the "return on investment" of a given requirement. Your administrator can define a custom formula to calculate the ROI score. Then, you can calculate the ROI score for each requirement by completing a simple form.
