James Wan is preparing a film adaptation of Knight Rider known in Spain as The Fantastic Car. The series first aired on NBC from 1982 to 1986 and was the initial launch of David Hasselhoff's career before his starring role in the hit series Beach Watchers. Created by Glen A. Larson, Hasselhoff played Michael Knight, a crime fighter assisted by his artificial intelligence Pontiac Trans Am, K.I.T.T.
Knight Rider would continue to inspire derived television shows, movies, and video games, with Hasselhoff even reprising his role in the 1991 television movie Knight Rider 2000, and appearing in an episode of the 2008 revival series. Both projects were intended to lead to to new series that never came to fruition. News had been heard for some time of a film adaptation of Knight Rider with different names of directors linked to the project over the years, including the screenwriter and director of Guardians of the Galaxy James Gunn and Justin Lin from Star Trek Beyond Now Michael and KITT appear to be officially meeting on the big screen.
Spyglass Media Group has partnered with James Wan and Michael Clear of Atomic Monster to adapt the classic '80s series into a feature film. According to Deadline, the reboot will be a current version of the series, keeping the anti-establishment theme of the original. Other details of the project's plot have not yet been announced. Former video game writer TJ Fixman is adapting the script and Judson Scott will be executive producing.
James Wan has been the director and creator of very popular horror movies like Saw and the first two films of Insidious and The Conjuring. He also reached box office milestones as director of the box office hits Aquaman and Furious 7. His production company is behind the films of Annabelle and other derivatives of The Conjuring, as well as the DC Universe's Swamp Thing series. Fixman has written scripts for various films and has been responsible for writing video games such as the Ratchet & Clank series and Resistance: Fall of Man.
