LAST CHRISTMAS (2019), DE PAUL FEIG – CRITICISM

There is no greater ambition apart from being pretty and charming, to easily digest an afternoon between parties.

The cast of Last Christmas He is headed by Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) and Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, 2018). There is a good balance between his characters, as he is presented to an educated, hardworking Tom with a great sense of generosity. While Kate is selfish, she has a somewhat destructive life and a chaotic family. His parents are Yugoslav migrants in the United Kingdom, this causes moments of comedy that bring spicy to the constant sweet taste of the film.

Paul Feig already directed Ghostbusters (2016), Spies (2015) or My best friend's Wedding (2011). He is a director with a fairly complete curriculum for comedy since he also worked on series such as Weeds, The Office or Parks and Recreation. On this occasion, just as he did in Bridget Jones ’Baby (2016), Emma Thompson not only plays Kate's mother, but also writes the script.

The message is familiar, somewhat romantic and, above all, of generosity. It has some warmth and emotionality that in the long term does not fill much, but it is solvent when it knows how to hit the right keys: it has three key scenarios, a fantasy environment, the mother-filial relationship evolves, there are two recurring jokes and a loving disagreement.

Full of light and color, families that gather around a table, a lot of fantasy and a fair mix of generosity and redemption.

It is not possible to delve into the history of both protagonists, it never reaches the expected romantic tone, and neither does Kate's relationships with her friends work too much. Perhaps there is some more settled scene with his mother and sister. While the conclusion for the rest of the characters goes through a gift, without words or more action, raising the commodification of Christmas and emptying of emotion.

It is well engraved and spun, almost too well, round. It is a commercial product that joins the filmography that is rescued by these dates: full of light and color, families that gather around a table, a lot of fantasy and a fair mix of generosity and redemption.

Nor does the romantic part work very well, since it stays halfway, there are two acquaintances that coincide on the scene from time to time. And the closing of the relationship makes it a Christmas story, which works as a seasonal product. We must recognize the hook of the final scene where the stories of all the characters that have passed through the screen are concluded at the same time. A moment that the public will wait after watching the trailers, where Kate sings the song that gives the film its title. This works almost like an exact premonition of the outcome, with updated fable tints. It is a perfect, musical closure that leaves a touch of tenderness.

It also has some comic scene where Thompson generally looks, with a role that suits him and that becomes the most complete, with more shadows than lights. In the film several musical references are made to George Michael and Wham !, in addition to the cameo of one of its members, Andrew Ridgeley.
