Longa noite (2019), by Eloy Enciso – Review

It is counted in Longa Noite the aftermath of the postwar period, through a dissection of the minds of the survivors, with their pain, their rancor, their fear, their mental restrictions.

When it still kicks in my mind Outdoor, the recent film by Benito Zambrano, now comes to us Longa Noite, which is also set in the immediate post-civil war. They would be the perfect complement, if I may be compared. Yes Outdoor it transports us to a secarral on which a sun of injustice falls, in which the post-war cruelties are staged, in a scenario that betrays the sadism of the landowners against the humble; whereas in Longa Noite what is explained is of equal misery, only that the landscape is Galician, humid and mostly nocturnal. Let's say it smells like mold, moss, with an atmosphere more than loaded. Nevertheless, Longa Noite It is almost Zen, minimalist, so that the essentials stand out above the concrete stories. By the way, I guess that the intention of Eloy Enciso, the director, is not so much to explain the concrete, but, I would say, intends to transport us to a climate. And to faith that he succeeds, and deeply.

It is counted in Longa Noite the aftermath of the postwar period, through a dissection of the minds of the survivors, with their pain, their rancor, their fear, their mental restrictions. On the other hand, Longa Noite proposes an anthropological look at the deep Galician environment, which, surely, still exists today. I must say that Eloy Enciso's work will not fall into ignominy. Rather, I predict, Eloy is waiting for a very interesting future, for his joy and that of us, the spectators, who are so in need of such bold, honest and risky proposals.

The movie is a challenge. And I advise you to go to see it with the digestion well done, because it contains challenges as we rarely see in the cinema.

The main virtue of Longa Noite is that it brings us closer to the minds of people, both those who lost out and those who won. Well, actually, and it is explained in the movie, everyone, one and the other, lost.

The actor who walks the various frames
that Eloy proposes to us is called Misha Bies, in a role as quiet as
intense. His stupefaction is ours. He is, his role, the perfect partner of
spectator, because it is through him that we are linked to the heart of the matter:
with his heart, that of the character, and with ours, that of the spectators. By
true, actors and actresses come from the world of theater, in large part
non-professionals

The movie is a challenge. And I advise you to go to see it with the digestion well done, because it contains challenges as we rarely see in the cinema. I take this opportunity to recommend that you listen to an interview with Eloy Enciso at the Seville Film Festival 2019.
