Actor Hugo Weaving almost returned as Agent Smith, but unfortunately, his schedule couldn't coincide with the planned shoot for Matrix 4.
Hugo weaving explained in a recent interview that despite serious effort by both him and the director of Matrix 4, Lana Wachowski, they just couldn't make the comeback work. Instead, Wachowski elaborated another story of Matrix 4 that I could advance without the character of Agent Smith.
Here's what Hugo Weaving told him about why he was ultimately unable to return as Agent Smith in Matrix 4:
"Lana Wachowski called me early last year," explained actor Hugo Weaving. “We've worked together five times, the Wachowskis and I on three Matrix movies, V for Vendetta and Atlas of the Clouds. I have been with them all over the world for many, many years. So, yeah, Lana was very interested in me participating in Matrix 4. "
The actor was part of the pre-production process:
“There was a reading with Keanu, Carrie and myself and some others from the old family… I loved it so much and wasn't sure about other parts,” Weaving revealed, adding that the programming was the reason he couldn't do Matrix 4.
“In the end, we talked about it, and when the offer to do it came to Warner Bros., I said yes the next day and spoke to Lana. I thought we could have done my scenes in May, June and July 2020 and we talked about money that they were trading. And we were all pretty neat and we agreed on dates and everything was fine, but then Lana decided she didn't think it would work. So, she cut the negotiations… That was her decision. So, that was really… But, yeah, it would be lovely to be there to hang out with all of them. I really like Keanu and Carrie. I haven't seen them in a while. I look forward to seeing the movie Matrix 4 ″.
