Although it would have been interesting, they weren't necessary.
James Gunn may be right, as Marvel always wants to make things as simple as possible so that people enjoy the action and the jokes and do not need to explain too much. But maybe in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, the director decides it's a good idea to use these elemental pistols to give Chris Pratt's Star Lord a grand finale.
James Gunn will premiere first Suicide Squad where we will see the villains of DC Comics in action and then it will close the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy where it will once again have Chris Pratt as Star Lord / Peter Quill, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn as Kraglin and Karen Gillan as Nebula.
