Review of An Extraordinary Friend: Simple Sympathy

An Extraordinary Friend will premiere next week on the Spanish billboard, directed by Marielle Heller and starring Tom Hanks and Matthew Rhys.

The journalist Lloyd Vogel receives the mission to investigate the figure of Fred Rogers. Fred's empathy, kindness, and decency disarm Vogel and force him to examine his own life.

An extraordinary friend is a clean movie,

that transmits warmth, affection, enjoyable, but stays there. Fred Rogers is goodness personified and that is very well reflected in the film, thus seeking internal conflict, but it does not delve further. We have a tender and motivating film, but insufficient for a more refined palate. Lloyd is our protagonist, the one with a well-drawn story arc and it reflects the internal conflicts between parents and children. Lloyd cannot be a good father because he has not reconciled with his, a plot already seen that here is solved in a clumsy way and with little imagination.

An extraordinary friend has a great Tom Hanks,

who can never be hit and, on the other hand, we have Matthew Rhys, a serene character, who does not force himself and shows us a most natural and simple performance. They both make a well-complemented duo and that helps on screen. The only downside is that the script limits Hanks, since they use Rogers as a narrative resource and makes Hanks relegated to the background.

An extraordinary friend wants to move,

that's your end and if you're cold like me, Maybe you will not be able to connect with her and you will be left with a "well, very good"; but if you are sensitive maybe this is your movie. Definitely, it's entertaining, candid, but maybe a little superficial, could have gone deeper.
