The Miserable (2019), by Ladj Ly – Review

Although very similar things have already been filmed, Ladj Ly gets a consistent movie every minute of the hundred he has, fierce and fiery.

Tremendous stage that unfolds in this opera prima. Ladj Ly, its director, was only enough to be an activist with the camera, to record what he has already lived in the Parisian suburbs, the "banlieue", places outside of any kind of justice. And, although very similar things have already been filmed, get a movie consistent in every minute of the hundred you have, fierce and ardent.

Let the film begin with the euphoric capital of France for winning the soccer world cup and a sad music of background it's not by chance. Nothing to celebrate Back in the slums of Montfermeilen, one of the areas most affected by the 2005 uprisings in the Seine-Saint-Denis region, the reality is a different one, still invisible to many. Communities of Muslims, Nigerians and Gypsies live constantly guarded by the police, a square always imperfect, about to explode.

Although the distribution is quite good, the cliché of the new and innocent police in a department of doubtful practices in the legal and ethical is already seen.

However, in this movie we will see that the real ones
protagonists of this clear complaint, those "miserable" are the young. The
life without rules and without security in the suburbs fit the low level of
life of the neighborhood children, an idea that director Ladj Ly wants to give an account,
also, with the popular phrase of Victor Hugo: “There are no weeds or men
bad, just bad cultivators. ” A criticism sometimes poorly stressed and awkwardly
communicated, but equally important and necessary.

The other protagonists, those of the main story, interest me less. Although the distribution is quite good, the cliché of the new and innocent police in a department of doubtful practices in the legal and ethical is already seen. Not only that, but also the mirror where you look are masterpieces like the series The wire or the movie Training day (2001), almost traced script. What if The Miserables try to deviate by more complicated and independent frames ends up looking like a kind of Crash (2004) or of A history of the Bronx (1993).

Only then does the movie become very uphill, almost
everything you suspect is going to happen happens, including dialogues,
movements of the characters and, therefore, the dramatic arc of the character of
honest policeman who plays Damien Bonnard. A good script job is done
in not blaming or blaming any of the sides, but everything has just happened
of turns in the same moral of always that, nevertheless, breaks of a

Synopsis Stéphane has just joined the Crime Fight Brigade in Montfermeil, a suburb east of Paris. There he meets his new partners, Chris and Gwada, two agents experienced in the enormous tensions that exist between the different groups organized by the control of the neighborhood.
