The Traitor (2019), by Marco Bellocchio – Criticism

It is not another tape to the great cluster of realizations about the mafia. It occupies a decent and realistic place.

The work in the script by the director himself, Marco Bellocchio, together with Valia Santella, Ludovica Rampoldi and Francesco Piccolo, unites this film, The traitor, with the tragic future of Ancient Rome. Family strategies are not different about the tragedy that deals with power and that, in the end, it ends with the families of the opposing sides, whether or not they have 'something to do' in the plot of that tragedy: nothing different from other gangster tapes that prefer -for family neatness- be called the Cosa Nostra, identifying the interests with which they traffic to become millionaires.

Perhaps for this reason, for an excellent interpretation of Pierfrancesco Favino (Best actor at the Seville Festival 2019), and for the dynamism of the film's own narrative, The traitor It is seen despite its more than 150 minutes of projection, because it has that dynamic of gangsters so close to the Sicilian parcel.

Indeed, the historical data is also a sum at that time when the Cosa Nostra dares to assassinate Giovanni Salvatore Augusto Falcone, an Italian judge, known for his attempts to dismantle the mafia and who fell on May 23, 1992 in Palermo.

For an excellent interpretation of Pierfrancesco Favino and for the dynamism of the narrative itself, The traitor It is seen despite its more than 150 minutes of projection.

European Film Awards: Nominated for
best film, director, script and actor in 2019; Cannes Film Festival: Section
Official and Festival of Seville: Best Actor (Pierfrancesco Favino) in 2019; have
endorsed its passage through the screens that it has accessed so far.

Actually, the character that Favino plays, develops that drama that involves the delation and collaboration with Buscetta, and his appreciation for Falcone, as well as the need to leave the Cosa Nostra that, however, will continue to pursue him for life. The narrative achieves a significant narrative force. It is not one more tape to the great cluster of realizations about the mafia, it occupies a dignified and realistic place.

Synopsis In the early 80's there was a war between the leaders of the Sicilian mafia. Tommaso Buscetta, a self-made man, decides to flee to hide in Brazil. His children are killed while he is unable to do anything to prevent it. When he is extradited by Brazilian justice, Buscetta makes a totally unexpected decision for him and for everyone who knew him: he decides to meet with Judge Giovanni Falcone, thus betraying the oath he made with the Cosa Nostra.
