Marvel Studios has cast Lovecraft Country star Jonathan Majors to play Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man 3.
According to Deadline, Ant-Man 3 has cast Lovecraft Country star Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror. Paul Rudd's Scott Lang has starred in two solo Ant-Man films, and will be back for at least one more. Last November it became known that Ant-Man 3 was in development and that director Peyton Reed will return once again for this installment. Since then we have not had more information about the project, although some recent rumors suggest that Ant-Man 3 could arrive in 2022.
The Jonathan Majors star has been on the rise for some time now, earning accolades for his performance in the indie film The Last Black Man in San Francisco. Majors also appeared in Spike Lee's Vietnam drama Da 5 Bloods earlier this year in which he co-starred with the recently deceased Chadwick Boseman, and is currently seen on the HBO series Lovecraft Country as Atticus Freeman. .
According to Deadline, Majors has signed for one of the lead roles in Ant-Man 3 alongside Rudd and actress Evangeline Lilly. It has not been officially revealed which character he will play, but sources indicate that it is likely that of Kang the conqueror. They also say that while there could be a twist to the character, right now he is positioned to be one of the main villains in Ant-Man 3.
In the comics, Kang, time traveling, is one of the Avengers' most formidable enemies. As a result, fans have been wondering if he will ever join the MCU. Now that Thanos (Josh Brolin) has ended his career as the great villain of this shared universe, the door is open for another major comic book villain like Kang to take over. Fans have long speculated where Kang might appear for the first time, with projects like Loki and, yes, Ant-Man 3 being considered. Now it seems likely that Scott and Hope will be the first to confront him.
Ant-Man 3 is targeting a production start date of June 2021, and the news of the Majors casting indicates that things are progressing as expected. Majors is a talented artist, and playing Kang would certainly be a win for the MCU. Of course, until Marvel officially confirms his character, Majors could end up playing someone else entirely. At the moment, however, he appears to be the long-awaited villain. Without a doubt, fans will be eager to theorize what brings Kang to Ant-Man 3, and they will have plenty of time to do so while they await the film's arrival.
